On 3rd September, 1939, when Neville Chamberlain declared that Britain was officially at war with Germany, and with Europe occupied by German forces, traditional supply lines for food imports were soon cut off. Britain turned to the USA and the Commonwealth but soon the Battle of the Atlantic was raging severely limiting imports from these sources, too. There was no alternative but for Brits to stand together defiantly on the Home Front and ‘Grow their Own’ encouraged by the now famous ‘Dig for Victory’ Campaign. Matthew’s lecture tells the story of ‘Dig for Victory’, from its inception and the education of ‘new’ gardeners, to its vital role in propaganda and looks at the techniques used by gardeners and their impact on the way we garden today.
Matthew trained at The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and have presented a number of television programmes, written several books and undertake lectures and talks.
